Inaugural CSA box from Eatwell Farm

As I mentioned previously, TC and I “resolved” to get CSA boxes this year from Eatwell Farm. Here is what we got yesterday, in our inaugural box:

Mandarin Oranges
Arugula
Spinach
Broccoli
Romanesco*
Bok Choy
Turnips
Collard Greens*
Daikon Radishes
Leeks
Savoy Cabbage
Pink Lady Apples
1/2 dozen pasture-raised eggs

*denotes items I have never cooked previously

And here is how it all looked:

So exciting! TC and I cooked some of it tonight. One dish was a recipe that we got in our box for cabbage, leeks, and white beans. It sounded promising, but it only turned out so-so, even though we added bacon(!). Still, at least it was healthy? (Minus the bacon.) The other dish we made was a derivative of my mushrooms and bok choy stir fry that is always reliably good, if I do say so myself. I think my favorite thing so far, though, are the oranges. They are exactly what an orange should taste like, if that makes any sense. And we have loads of them. Hooray!

Here’s a completely random photo of the Spicy Peanut Eggplant and Shallot Stew that we made on Saturday. It was super delicious. I’m think I’m developing a huge crush on The Post Punk Kitchen blog.

  1. (1) You’ve never cooked collards before?!?! How is that possible!? (2) I’m in love with theppk.com too–did you see the new Rasberry Truffle Brownie recipe she posted today? OMG!   2. I’m as shocked as JOS that you’ve never cooked collard greens, until I just realized that the first time I’ve ever cooked them was this year for New Year’s (huge good luck gesture down south). I have a nice ‘vegetarian’ recipe for cooking collard greens that I’d be happy to send your way if you want it. I use ‘vegetarian’ loosely because I added some drippings from some browned andouille sausage and chicken broth instead of vegetable broth. But they were quite delicious (and easy to cook).

    The eggplant and shallot stew looks amazing. I’m going to have to try it this weekend.

  3. What a great haul! I’m jealous that you get such great veggies in the winter. Makes me excited for my CSA which doesn’t start until June, I think.
    My go-to greens method is to saute olive oil and garlic then greens until they’re dark and soft (however you like them) and then turn the heat off and squirt with lemon juice and sprinkle with parmesan. I like this better than the bacony recipes. It just seems lighter. The lemon juice is magic, but if you don’t have a lemon, cider vinegar is a good substitute. Happy cooking!

    • JUNE?!?! Yet another reason for you to move back West.
      I like greens with just olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. But lemon juice sounds great too!

  5. This makes me even more excited for my CSA box to arrive, but it doesn’t start until February :-(

    Collards (actually, greens in general) were one of my staples when I lived in the Bay. I have recipes for both southern-style stewed collards and “Chinese-style” stir-fried collards.

  6. Collards are awesome raw also. I use them as a wrap.

  7. Josh and I have been meaning to/debating whether to sign up for CSA boxes for…gosh…two years maybe. We keep worrying we’ll have to supplement a bunch with our standard go-to veggies like tomatoes and red bell peppers. Are you finding that you’ve got enough to get you through a comfortable week of cooking?

    • Well, it’s only our first box, so it might be too early to say. We definitely had to do a supplemental grocery run once we decided on the first few things to cook. What’s nice is that I almost always use the same veggies (carrots, onions, peppers, broccoli) and this has forced me out of my comfort zone.

      So, I would say that convenience is not one of the strong points of a CSA box. We’re doing it more to eat only seasonal and locally grown produce, and to support the farmers more directly. As for the amount, it’s definitely enough for one week for 2 people. I was pleased with the general variety of things… I’ve heard from other CSA subscribers that they get huge amounts of one thing, and that’s all they’re eating for a week. Ugh. In contrast, Eatwell seems to do a good job with variety. And here’s another reason to sign up:

        It’s got to be a good sign if you guys are getting good variety in January. We may have to revisit this idea ourselves. And you’re right that the causes of supporting local and seasonal farming are worthwhile on their own.
